Adults with Disabilities

The mission of the Strides program is to provide high-quality education, training, and support that prepares and empowers adults with intellectual disabilities to achieve their goals towards independent, personal fulfillment, work readiness, and employment.

  • Strides is a full-day program focusing on independent living and job readiness. It creatively integrates core skills, including academics, communication, household management, personal growth, self-determination, technology, and work habits, into various classes based on student interests. We aim to help students reach their full potential, meet their individual goals, and become independent. Participants choose learning tracks with classes aligned to meet their Individual Person Plan goals. Students must attend Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., unless staff support them at a local job.

    Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, participants must meet the following criteria:

  • The Strides Paid Internship for Adults with Disabilities operates year-round, with active placement periods typically running for ten consecutive months within the annual program cycle. Interns usually work about four hours each day and participate in approximately one hour of classroom activities, five days per week. They receive ongoing support from a transition specialist and earn minimum wage. Placement is customized to match each intern’s interests and the opportunities available at partner sites.

Adult school staff collaborate with work location teams and the transition specialist to ensure interns receive the training, accommodations, and guidance they need to succeed. This program is supported by the Department of Rehabilitation and the Regional Center of the East Bay, which provides referrals and funding.

Interns have been selected for the 2025-26 school year. Submit your contact information for more information.
